How do I go about muting phone participants in a video room?

Using a voice conference seems like the most straightforward method (e.g. mute conference participant), but video docs explicitly state don't use conferences. https://www.twilio.com/docs/video/adding-programmable-voice-participants-video-rooms#known-issues

  • The easiest way to do this is to unsubscribe participants from the audio track that is being published to the room by the phone participant. this blog shows the audio track (Participant A's audio track) that would need to be unsubscribed from. https://www.twilio.com/blog/now-you-can-add-programmable-voice-participants-video-group-rooms

With this solution there is no way for the phone participant to know that they have been muted, or have a way to unmute themselves (without someone else in the room saying/doing something). Usually, I've found it better to have people ask the participant to mute themselves on the device they are calling in from.
